Intermediate-Care Facilities for the Developmentally Disabled (ICF/DD)—Known at the federal level as ICF/MRs (mental retardation), these facilities provide services for people of all ages with mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities. ICF/DDs have 16 or more beds. Individuals may have intermittent or continuous needs for nursing care. There are less than 15 ICF/DDs in California.
Intermediate-Care Facilities for Persons with Developmental Disabilities–Habilitative (ICF/DD-H)—ICF/DD-Hs are facilities with 15 or fewer beds. Individuals usually have intermittent needs for nursing care. The term “Habilitative” means services are provided for the purpose of enhancing, or preventing the regression of intellect, functional skills and the emotional well-being of the person. Typically, care is provided in a group home setting. There are approximately 800 ICF/DD-Hs in California, 85% of which contain six beds or fewer.
Intermediate-Care Facilities for Persons with Developmental Disabilities–Nursing (ICF/DD-N)—ICF/DD-Ns are facilities of 15 beds or fewer which serve persons with developmental disabilities who have continuous needs for nursing care for monitoring of medications or conditions such as epilepsy. More than 90% of ICF/DD-N clients utilize wheel chairs. There are approximately 300 ICF/DD-Ns in California.

Intermediate-Care Facilities for Persons with Developmental Disabilities-Continuous Nursing (ICF/DD-CN) ICF/DD-CNs are facilities with 15 or fewer beds serving individuals who must be on Medi-Cal and under medical necessity for continuous skilled-nursing care and observation, including but not limited to tracheostomy care with or without ventilator dependence for all or part of the day; total parenteral intravenous therapy; frequent medical or nursing interventions such as respiratory therapy, hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, special feeding requirements, intravenous administration of medications, debridement, packing, and medicated irrigation of wounds. This is a new pilot program beginning in 2002.
